PLEASE NOTE: New registrations for the NVQ 2356-99 Level 3 electrical qualification ended on 30th November 2020. It has been replaced by the City & Guilds NVQ 2346-03 Level 3 Electrotechnical Experienced Worker Qualification as the 3 route for experienced workers in the industry.

City & Guilds NVQ 2356-99 Level 3 in Electrotechnical Services – Experienced Worker

Also known as the “Mature Candidate Assessment”, this qualification was designed solely for experienced persons who have worked in the electrotechnical industry as a practising electrician for a minimum of 5 years.

Candidates were required to demonstrate their technical knowledge, practical skills and competence to the industry standards at Level 3 in any one of the occupations of this qualification – and in line with the current edition of the IET wiring regulations (BS7671).

Relevant industry experience gained whilst training can be acceptable but will need to be verified as meeting the qualification requirements.

Candidates with experience and qualifications from overseas may well be eligible, but must first apply for and acquire a UK NARIC Statement of Comparability.

Further Eligibility

Ideally, the candidate should have completed one of the relevant electrotechnical theory courses listed below:.

  • C&G ‘A’ certificate
  • C&G ‘A’ certificate plus ‘B’ certificate
  • C&G 2360 Part 1
  • C&G 2360 Part 1 plus 2360 Part 2
  • C&G 2351 L3
  • C&G 2330 L2
  • C&G 2330 L2 plus C&G 2330 L3
  • C&G 2365 L2 & L3
  • Other UK based qualifications (such as BTEC, NC/HNC etc.) may also be taken into consideration against the underpinning knowledge requirements of the award.

NVQ 2356 Assessment Options

There were six different Occupations / Specialist Pathways in the Level 3 in Electrotechnical Services Experienced Worker qualification

  • Electrical Installation (Building and Structures)
  • Electrical Maintenance
  • Installing Instrumentation and Associated Equipment
  • Installing Public Lighting Systems and Associated Equipment
  • Panel Building
  • Electrical Machine Repair and Rewind*

Within each occupational assessment there were 7 or 8 different Units to work through, plus the AM2 Practical Assessment – also referred to as Unit 399 – at the end. *Except for the Electrical Machine Rewind & Repair, where the AM2 is NOT required.
